BMC defends work, citizens might approach green tribunal.

A group of citizens, demanding an end to the concretisation of riverbeds in the city, recently met Municipal Commissioner Ajoy Mehta. The Rivermarch group’s demands have been endorsed by a BJP MLA Prakash Surve, and two BJP corporators – Vidyarthi Singh and Asavari Patil.

Prakash Jhaveri, a member of the group said, “We wanted to draw the attention of municipal commissioner to the heavy concretisation work being carried out in Poisar river in Kandivali. The work is destroying the biodiversity of the river.”
In a letter to the BMC chief, the group and the politicians demanded that the work be stopped and a committee be formed to monitor the city’s ecology. Not happy with Mehta’s response, they are considering approaching the National Green Tribunal.

An engineer with the BMC said, “We are deepening the riverbed, and desilting is being done. If the foundation is not strengthened, the slums lining the banks of the river will collapse.” Mehta too defended the BMC’s work and said that all technical aspects of the work have already been considered.
