ECO SENSITIVE ZONES (ESZs) NOTIFICATIONS
Draft notifications for the Eco-Sensitive Zones are being issued under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986. The ESZs are important as they form buffer area around the protected areas – national park, wildlife sanctuaries, tiger reserves, elephant reserves, etc. ESZs offer an additional level of protection to all the protected areas.
CAT has been writing to the MoEF&CC regarding the importance of maintaining the ESZs. CAT is one of the few organizations who has been sending the comments for most of the draft notifications on the ESZs, with a special focus on ESZs of the Tiger Reserves. CAT has sent suggestions for more than 100 ESZs so far. We have been sending about 60-80 comments/suggestions per draft notification. The Ministry has started incorporating few of the suggestions submitted by CAT.
