The Maharashtra Government had taken a decision to denotify about 500 square km of forests from the Melghat Sanctuary. As a result of our efforts, we have been able to ensure that this habitat continued to be treated as a sanctuary and has not been commercially exploited by the Forest Department. Land from this area has also not been diverted for irrigation projects.
The area that was denotified has now been included within the buffer zone of the Melghat Tiger Reserve and will continue to receive legal protection under the provisions of the Wildlife Protection Act.
